Chapter Six: Radio gupshup and some serious talk....

1) BBC World Services is looking to spread the word about the availability of its content on Indian FM radio stations and is starting a marketing campaign. The broadcast company has radio partnership in 13 cities in the country, whereby it provides access to three of its shows. The partnership is a content based association.

2) Absolute Radio was recently launched in U.K with the Times of India Group providing the money for the £53.2m sale through its subsidiary Times Infotainment Media Limited. It is the TOI Group's first acquisition outside its home market.
Are these developments , a sign of exciting things to come for Radio industry? Watsay?...

Anyways, these were the recent updates....Lets advertise NRM now!!

The horizons of Radio are expanding....the Radio is ringing cash registers after a slump. The stations will soon be able to be a comfortable niche and make money . Within a year or two, when radio stations and their audiences get more defined, people will know where to go for what kind of content. The radio entrants will be forced to sharply focus their audience. The "Niche"would be in, without ruling out the "Mass" rule...

But the Question arises, Is this a case of one too many? With Radio stations having specific target audience or going "Local" into smaller B and C towns.... Can Indian market sustain so many radio stations? Going by the International benchmark, even 150 stations across India is a sustainable proposition. There are more than 6000 radio stations in US and they have defined business and content models.

Tarun Katial, COO Big 92.7 FM comments, "There is a need for consolidation. There are many small radio stations which have got reach in the districts, but they are not profitable at all. "On other hand, MY FM Business Head, Harrish Bhatia comments that"Future of Radio is going local".And there is Times Group is trying to be a Global player with Radio...

Experts say that radio industry is undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts, a consolidating phase which is a signal to the Radio Revolution which is beckoning Indian media industry. With the horizon of medium itself expanding into Internet Radio and localised content and flavour....it is going to be one of the most accessible form of getting your dose of music...And Music is just the beginning as far as content is concerned....

Tune in...Play on....Radio is Raring to go...
The Great Indian Radio Growth Story is yet to see its climax....

Im all "ears" to listen....Are you?

Tune into NRM 08 for MOREEEEEEEEEE...on 21st September, Sunday at Symbiosis Vishwabhavan Auditorium, Senapati Bapat Road, Pune

Cheers
